We're very happy to announce that as of today, all of our work is going to be released under a CC license. This includes our physical work as well, so that our designs themselves will be available for others to use and to share for non-commercial purposes. For certain items we're even going to post up the Revit models and CAM files for all.

We're very happy to announce that as of today, all of our work is going to be released under a CC license. This includes our physical work as well, so that our designs themselves will be available for others to use and to share for non-commercial purposes. For certain items we're even going to post up the Revit models and CAM files for all.

Why are we doing this? It's not just because we're in the middle of designing Wikipedia's offices. We've felt for a while that if our goal is really to make the world a more interesting place by doing great things, our own egos and desire for control shouldn't stand in the way of that. If others can use our ideas, or get inspired by us, and in turn do something great then we win anyways.As designers, we embrace change, transparency, and collaboration with others. Also, we've found that when you horde your 'good ideas' you become stale, hollow, and self-centered. Instead of spending time coming up with more and better ideas, you spend your time defending and focusing on your old (possibly bad) ideas. And then you quickly wind up hooked on brain-crack, and not doing anything anyways. Screw that.

However, our ideas do have value. That's why people hire us to design and build things for them. We'd hate to see one of our designs get poorly mass-produced out of horrible materials by sweatshop labor. Would kind of defeat the whole point for what we're doing. So that's why we're taking the middle ground when it comes to Copyrights. Everything we do can be used for non-commercial purposes as long as we get a shout-out somewhere, and as long as those folks share what they did too. We're totally open to commercial uses of our work as well, however there we require some level of involvement (if only to be certain it doesn't suck). As for patents, well, we might file some design patents for some of our work, however we're totally open to granting limited licenses to people for those items as well for non-commercial use if the need arises, and we'll note on our site anything that's under such protection.
