Burning man projects over the years
This last week we watched our our friends head back from another successful yet trying Burning Man festival. As we vicariously enjoyed their journey, we’ve been thinking about all the projects we’ve done for the event over the years. From fun signage to massive mobile art to our multiple years involvement in the temple projects.
The Serpent Twins were probably our most immersive project. Spanning multiple years; we spent the most amount of design and fabrication time on this project….
The brain child of Kyrsten Mate & Jon Sarriugarte, we worked on everything on this project from the initial renderings for funding proposals to design of specific elopements, graphics, swag production, prop production & the actual build of the mobile serpent art pieces. You can see our original project page on it here.
We made camp signs, giant glowing lanterns, a bunch of props and “on theme” transportable, flat pack seating to deck out the camp.
These were then used at Burning Man and many other festivals the Serpent Twins / Empire of Dirt crew attended.
When David Best did the temple in 2012 , we helped with the DFMA so the design could be realized into a structure to be easily fabricated and assembled on site.
As part of that project, we also made these cute benches to go with the temple, creating a seating area out front for visitors.
In 2013 we helped with DFMA again on the Temple of Whollyness…..
Again helping to rationalize the design into easily fabricate-able parts, that then need to be assembled by a team of volunteers at the site.
Then last year, in 2023 - we helped with the temple again, providing DFMA help - and rationalizing the front entry “hands” sculpture among other things.

What’s next? We’re looking forward to seeing what the future brings.
